Every fall, the first cold night finds the furnaces that were not ready for it. Most of those breakdowns announce themselves weeks ahead of time – in small ways a homeowner can catch in about fifteen minutes, with no tools beyond a flashlight and a fresh filter. Here is the check we walk our own families through, and the honest line between what you should do yourself and what should wait for a technician.
The 15-minute walk-through
1. Change the filter before you do anything else
A clogged filter is the single most common cause of a furnace shutting itself down. If you can hold the old filter up to a light and not see through it, it is done. Write the date on the edge of the new one – a one-dollar habit that settles every “when did we last change it?” debate for good.
2. Look at the burner flame color
With the furnace running, the burner flames should be steady and blue. A lazy, yellow, or flickering flame means the burners are dirty or the fuel is not burning cleanly – and incomplete combustion is not a wait-and-see problem. Turn the system off and have it looked at.
3. Listen to the first minute of a heating cycle
Turn the thermostat up five degrees and stand by the furnace as it starts. A healthy cycle is quiet and even. Screeching usually points to a blower belt or bearing; repeated clicking to an ignition problem; a low rumble after the burners shut off to a burner issue worth a professional look. You do not need to diagnose it – just note what you hear and when.
4. Clear three feet around the unit
Furnace closets collect paint cans, boxes, and coats all summer. Give the unit room to breathe and keep anything that can burn well away from it. While you are there, make sure the vents and returns around the house are open and unblocked – closing vents in unused rooms strains the system rather than saving money.
5. Test the carbon monoxide detector
Press the test button, and replace the batteries if you cannot remember doing it last. If you do not have a CO detector on every floor with a bedroom, put that at the top of the shopping list – it is the one item on this page that can matter more than the furnace itself.
When to stop and call a professional
Some symptoms are not do-it-yourself territory, and the honest thing is to say so plainly. Shut the system down and call if you notice any of these:
- A smell of gas anywhere near the furnace – leave the house first, then call from outside.
- A yellow or wavering burner flame that does not settle.
- Short cycling – the furnace starting and stopping every few minutes.
- A CO detector that chirps an alarm, not a low battery.
- Water pooling around a high-efficiency furnace’s drain line.
What a real tune-up includes
A proper seasonal tune-up is not a salesman with a clipboard. The technician should clean the burners, check the heat exchanger, test ignition and safety controls, measure gas pressure and temperature rise, and leave you a written record of what was checked and what was found. You should hear the price before the work starts and see the old parts if anything is replaced.
